Nigeria is to pay $16 million as annual dues to the African Union (AU), the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ojo Maduekwe, said in Abuja on Thursday.

Maduekwe told journalists on the outcome of the just concluded 14th ordinary session of the AU in Addis Ababa that the dues before now was $14 million but `because of the impact of the global economic challenges’ the budget had to be increased to $16 million.

“In the 2009 budget that just ended, Nigeria paid $14 million that was our access contribution and other four countries, Libya, Algeria, South Africa and Egypt paid the same amount.

“Because of the enhanced role of the African leaders, the Commission came with the proposal for across the board increment for all the states which means that Nigeria and others were meant to pay $18 million in the current budget year,’’ Maduekwe said.
